Goedhuis, November 2013
A tremendous Hermitage with a lovely full palate, sweetly intense black fruit flavours, with gentle spiced layers. The great depth of textured flavours support the pronounced masculine tannins to provide real length and age worthiness.
Domaine du Colombier
This 16 hectare estate is run by brothers Florent and David Viale and produces a dark, bold interpretation of Hermitage. These wines are brawny and powerful, and have a distinctive flavour palette of black fruits, black olive tapenade, and graphite smokiness. Although grape growers for almost a century, the family only began to bottle their own wines in the early 1990s. Their wines may take a little time to come around, but will reward in the long run.
Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
