Antonio Galloni, January 2014, Score: 89-92
The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles La Vigne en Foule emerges from a high density parcel and was vinified with 100% whole clusters. Today it is dense, rich and powerful. It will be interesting to see how the 2012 develops, and in particular if it develops finesse or remains a wine of pure structure. The 2012 will be bottled only in magnum, so it is almost certainly going to be a wine to cellar for at least a handful of years. Drink 2024-2039

Burghound, January 2014, Score: 89-91
Floral and spice scents presently dominate the cool and pure red pinot fruit and earth aromas. There is terrific intensity to the highly energetic and mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess a silky mid-palate and a very firm, lingering and balanced finish that displays moderate backend austerity. Note that my suggested drinking window is predicated on the magnum format. Drink 2026+

Stephen Tanzer, January 2014, Score: 88-90
(a special bottling from vines planted in 2002 at a density of 36,000 to the hectare--or one plant every 30 centimeters; all millerande grapes; 100% vendange entier; aging in a single one-year-old 350-liter barrel): Good full red. Quite high-toned on the nose, offering scents of raspberry and strawberry liqueur, flowers and spices. Densely packed, rich and very ripe, but I wanted a bit more balancing acidity. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. I find the ripeness veering toward roasted. Did I catch this one on an awkward day? Winemaker Pierre Vincent plans to bottle this wine entirely in magnums.

Region
Gevrey Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
