  • Goedhuis, January 2014

This famous Grand Cru can so often be incredibly variable, but this example from Drouhin Laroze, with its superbly positioned vines within the Clos, is quite sensational. Succulent, rich and full of bright berry fruits, this has a superb feeling of density, with its tightly packed flavours, rounded tannins and beautifully long, complex finish. High class indeed.

  • Neal Martin, December 2013, Score: 93-95

The 2012 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a very fragrant bouquet with scents of blueberry, blackcurrant pastilles and dried rose petals - all very well delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, grainy tannins, good depth and great precision towards the finish. This is one of the domaine's best wines this year - real class.

  • Burghound, January 2014, Score: 92-94

This is more expressive than it usually is at this point in its development with a broad-ranging nose of red currant, pungent earth, soft wood spice and hints of underbrush. There is a lovely vibrancy to the rich, caressing and restrained large-scaled flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and strikingly good persistence on the youthfully austere finish. Good stuff in 2012 but even more structured than usual so patience will be required. Drink 2027+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2014, Score: 17.5

Juicy and sweet fruit; pleasantly punchy tannins. This has the gutsiness that their Chapelle-Chambertin seems to lack. Real leathery, savoury power on the finish. Drink 2018-2034

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less
