Tasting Notes
-
Neal Martin, December 2013,
Score: 90-93The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru seems a little unruly on the nose with just a touch of heat showing in my sample. The palate is candied and ripe on the entry with sappy ripe red berry fruit, developing in the mouth into quite a sinewy Charmes-Chambertin with firm structure on the finish. I am sure this will sort itself out by the time of bottling but it seems to be misbehaving at the moment.
Producer
Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.
Region
Charmes Chambertin
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
