Neal Martin, December 2013,
The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has been produced since 2009. It has a pleasant raspberry leaf and forest floor aromas that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, crisp raspberry and spicy fruit with an unexpected dash of white pepper on the finish. This is a fine Charmes-Chambertin limited to just two new barrels.
Burghound, January 2014,
The wood influence is more evident because while it certainly does not dominate the very fresh red currant, freshly turned earth and subtle spice aromas, it is far from invisible. There is good size, weight and punch to the medium weight plus flavors that possess good if not outstanding density before terminating in a lingering and balanced finish where the supporting tannins are well integrated. Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
