Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, January 2014

Adjoining Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Chapelle Chambertin tends to produce a slightly more forward-drinking and approachable style. This wine is beautifully open, full of charm and purity. Strong dark wild forest fruit flavours, nicely concentrated and very giving on the finish.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2013,
    Score: 91-93

The 2012 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru demands coaxing from the glass, unfurling to reveal blackcurrant and fresh strawberry scents, joined by a hint of violet with time. The palate has a good backbone. This is a more masculine take on the vineyard, nicely balanced, linear and taut with fine precision and nuance on the finish. This should age with style.

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2014,
    Score: 91-93

A perfumed nose of purple fruit, earth and appealing spice notes complements well the equally spicy and velvet-textured, concentrated and seductive flavors that are blessed with plenty of palate coating dry extract. I like the sense of harmony and balance on the lingering finish and this should develop over a 12 to 15 year horizon. Drink 2024+

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, January 2014,
    Score: 16+

Compact and understated on the nose. More generous on the palate with crunchy redcurrant fruit and pretty overt oak. Dry, almost sour finish. Missing the flesh and blood of grand cru burgundy. Drink 2016-2026

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Chapelle-Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
