Tasting Notes

    Goedhuis, July 2017

This Margaux 2012 is just entering its drinking window, and is absolutely charming in style. Graceful sweet fruit, powdery tannins, lithe body, and excellent, fine concentration make for a precise, neat, and hugely pleasing claret. The best Paveil de Luze in recent years. Robert Parker was full of praise for the 2012: “under-rated and could easily qualify as a classified growth”.

    Score: 86-88

Tasted from a barrel sample at en primeur. The Paveil de Luze has a crisp, tertiary, cedar-tinged nose that is quite Pauillac in style with a minty freshness. The palate is nicely balanced with crisp acidity – quite masculine with noticeable tobacco/cigar box notes and a slightly clipped, dry finish. Hopefully it will flesh out during its élevage. Tasted April 2013.

    Robert Parker, April 2015,
    Score: 89

The president of the society of cru bourgeois (Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc), Baron De Luze, has produced another beautiful wine from his lovely estate. His 2012 Margaux exhibits supple texture, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, loads of blackcurrants, a hint of forest floor and floral notes. This is a silky textured, medium-bodied, yet lovely, concentrated wine that is endearing, complex, and typical of this terroir, which is probably under-rated and could easily qualify as a classified growth. Drink it over the next 7-10 years. A sleeper. Drink 2015-2025

Producer

Château Paveil de Luze

Château Paveil de Luze is a small property located on deep, well-drained gravel soils which are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. A charmer, its polished wines mature early and are an excellent choice for the impatient drinker.

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
