Goedhuis, December 2012
A source of much discussion whether this great vineyard should be a Grand Cru or not, the fact is it always makes an extraordinarily complex Vosne Romanée. A beautifully perfumed wine, this has refined weight and is a beautiful mix between initial elegance and subtle power on the finish. A fabulously classy wine.
Burghound, January 2013,
(from vines planted in 1950). A very spicy nose of plum, earth, violet and ripe red currants leads to velvet-textured middle weight flavors that possess plenty of dry extract that imparts a sappy quality to the moderately complex but impressively long finish. This has the underlying material to develop well and I have found over the years that age is typically kind to this wine. (89-92)/2021+
Domaine de l'Arlot
Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
