Antonio Galloni, November 2012,
Score: 89-91A huge, structured wine, the 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Cœur du Roy Vieilles Vignes is all about tension, minerality and power. The Cœur du Roy doesn't have the overt fruit of the Evocelles, rather it is a wine that stands out for its persistence. The firm tannins are going to require some time to settle down. Bernard Dugat used 75% whole clusters and new oak was around 65%. Drink 2020-2033

Burghound, January 2014,
Score: 90The pure, complex and airy dark berry fruit aromas display a good level of ripeness while remaining fresh and bright. There is a taut muscularity to the rich, round and lush mid-palate yet there is knockout precision to the powerful, intense, balanced and brilliantly long and quite firmly structured finish. This robust effort is textbook Gevrey. Drink 2018+

Jancis Robinson, November 2012,
Score: 16.5+50- to 102-year-old vines, 70% whole bunch, two-thirds new oak. Broad and sweet on the nose. Rich and solid but quite severe on the finish, especially in comparison with the Evocelles. Dry finish. Not charming! Drink 2020-2032

Region
Gevrey-Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
