Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, December 2012
Lying above Clos St Jacques, this is full of wild dark berry fruits. It has almost gamey characteristics and is extremely dense with a massively full palate. One of the star wines in this superb Domaine's cellar, a wine of great class.

Burghound, January 2013,
Score: 92(from vines planted mostly in 1949). This is also quite elegant with an almost ethereal nose of restrained and exceptionally cool yet ripe red pinot fruit that is laced with notes of wet stone, humus and underbrush. This is almost impressively energetic with a lovely and very clean mouth feel to the middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality that is akin to chalk, all wrapped in an exuberant and utterly delicious finish. Even though this should age beautifully you just feel like drinking it. Drink 2018+

Jancis Robinson, January 2013,
Score: 16.5Dark and savoury. Rather dusty. Then quite dense and dark on the palate, good depth but a little flat overall. (JH) Drink 2017-2025

Jancis Robinson, January 2013,
Score: 16.5Rich and round. The fruit is – at last – to the fore here. Some energy. Definitely a notch up. Good balance. Drink 2016-2028

Domaine Geantet-Pansiot

Created in 1955 by Edmond Geantet, this popular domaine has been run by his friendly and energetic son Vincent since 1989. Now joined by his son and daughter, Fabien and Emilie, the Geantets have built up this domaine into one of the most substantial estates in the Côte de Nuits, with 22 hectares of vines across Gevrey Chambertin and beyond. Their new winery at the edge of the village may not be one of the region’s architectural high points, but it has given them the vital space to vinify at ease. Through a combination of old vines (plenty of centenaries in their vineyards), sumptuous fruit concentration and generous new oak they make a hedonistic style of Burgundy. With a generous 10 day cold maceration, the colours are deep and the fruit aromas dark and ripe.
Region
Gevrey-Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
