Tasting Notes

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2013,
    Score: 94-97

(from a .45 ha parcel of 100+ year old vines). An exuberantly spicy and phenomenally complex nose is quite broad with a dazzling variety of nuances to the red and black currant, cassis and violetsuffused scents. The old vines are very much in evidence here as well with strikingly well-concentrated and seductive broadscaled flavors. The copious dry extract presently renders the firm but refined tannins all but invisible on the magnificently long finish. This is stylish, classy and one of the best wines of the vintage and unlike a number of the preceding wines, this is actually approachable already even though it will age for years to come. Score: 19

105-year-old vines. Very opulent, dense, complex nose. Sweet and rich but with a great undertow of structure and density. Not at all flashy. Amazing stuff that, funnily enough, recalls the great really old vine wines of Australia - not that I expect Laurent P to be thrilled by the comparison. Great life, confidence and energy. Such persistence! Drink 2018-2040

Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations.

Region

Clos Saint-Denis

Tucked between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, and sharing the same stratum of limestone, Morey-St-Denis is unfairly less celebrated than its better known neighbours. It boasts five Grand Crus, including Clos-St-Denis. Slightly lighter than Clos-de-la-Roche, Clos Saint-Denis' wines balance delicacy, finesse and wonderful Pinot fruit - the quintessential Grand Cru of Morey-St-Denis.
