Tasting Notes

Neal Martin, November 2014,
Score: 88Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Quite deep in color, Michel Gros’s Clos de Vougeot Grand Maupertui has a herbaceous but not vegetal bouquet with assiduous use of stems that lends freshness and vigor. Tertiary and cigar-box tones dominate the aromatics, but with time those broody red and black fruit begin to emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, well-judged acidity and a harmonious, quite silky finish that is showing just a little too much toasty oak at the moment. Give this Clos de Vougeot another year in bottle. Drink 2016-2030

Burghound, January 2013,
Score: 91-94A somber, cool and very restrained nose offers up notes of plum, dark berries and pungent earth, all of which is trimmed in discreet hints of oak spice. There is good muscle to the powerful and almost painfully intense big-bodied flavors that offer excellent richness and drive on the strikingly long finish where notes of wood toast and saline surface. This should be excellent if you have the patience to wait. Drink 2022+

Jancis Robinson, October 2014,
Score: 17.5Quite dense ruby. Lip smacking and flavoursome on the nose. Quite sharp acidity but good fruit intensity in the morello-cherry/damson spectrum. Very much unformed but it should get there. Even if not the most concentrated of the lot. Drink 2020-2032
