Tasting Notes
-
Burghound, January 2014,
Score: 93An unobtrusive note of wood highlights the perfumed, airy and relatively elegant red berry fruit, spice and Gevrey style earth-infused nose. There is a more evident minerality to the big-bodied, sleek and muscular flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the pungently saline finish. This is sufficiently accessible that it should be approachable young but allow for longer-term aging too if desired. Drink 2026+
Producer
Domaine Tortochot

This is a substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine with 12 hectares that include some of the finest premiers and grands crus in the village. Previously Chantal Tortochot’s father Gabriel sold most of his fruit to the famous Beaune négociant, Joseph Drouhin. Since taking over in 2001 Chantal has been carefully and surely building the domaine’s name and reputation around the world. In 2013 the estate became organically certified. Chantal favours early bottling to capture the fruit purity.
Region
Chambertin
Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
