Tasting Notes
-
Burghound, April 2012,
Score: 89-92This is completely overwhelmed by its wood, from the nose to the finish and while there is good density, it's not at all clear that this will ever completely integrate the extremely generous oak. What concerns me even more than having residual wood on the nose even in full maturity is what the oak is likely to do to the texture of the wine, which in my experience is never a positive trait. We of course will see in time but I would advise caution.Drink: 2022+
Producer
Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.
Region
Côte de Nuits-Villages
This communal appellation covers the vineyards of Fixin, Brochon, Premeaux, Comblanchien, and Corgoloin. Spread along the length of the Cotes de Nuits the wines of the different communes are, unsurprisingly, varied, reflecting a range of different exposures and nuances of soild type. The vast majority of production is red, with just a smattering of Chardonnay grown. The reds can offer very good value from the better producers.
