Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2011

A Gevrey Chambertin with presence, this 2010 Vieilles Vignes delivers an ample and broad palate of sweet damson plums, red cherries and toasted spice. The Geantet's style tends to be quite velvetyand seductive but their 2010s have followed the vintage's characters and are nicely sculpted.

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2012,
    Score: 91

(from a mix of Brochon vines planted between 1922 and 1961 that average 60+ years of age; in 2010 this has the Les Jeunes Rois fruit in it). A gorgeously complex and lightly spiced nose serves up notes of violet, plum and plenty of pungent earth that is also reflected by the dense and serious medium-bodied flavors. There is excellent volume and concentration to the mid-palate that possesses impeccable phenolic ripeness, all wrapped in a seductive yet linear finish. This is very Gevrey in character with a brawny yet not overtly rustic mouth feel. Recommended. 2020+

Domaine Geantet-Pansiot

Created in 1955 by Edmond Geantet, this popular domaine has been run by his friendly and energetic son Vincent since 1989. Now joined by his son and daughter, Fabien and Emilie, the Geantets have built up this domaine into one of the most substantial estates in the Côte de Nuits, with 22 hectares of vines across Gevrey Chambertin and beyond. Their new winery at the edge of the village may not be one of the region’s architectural high points, but it has given them the vital space to vinify at ease. Through a combination of old vines (plenty of centenaries in their vineyards), sumptuous fruit concentration and generous new oak they make a hedonistic style of Burgundy. With a generous 10 day cold maceration, the colours are deep and the fruit aromas dark and ripe.

Region

Gevrey-Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
