  • Goedhuis, December 2011

Brilliantly bright purple in colour, there are subtle hints of cocoa and spice on the nose. In the mouth this is full of power and intensity. A firm and structured, classically styled Gevrey Chambertin.

  • Burghound, January 2012, Score: 87-89

(from a parcel of vines in Les Epointures, a lieu-dit near Chapelle-Chambertin; an abeille is a honey bee). Here too there is mild reduction but glimpses of ripe red currant, plum and more intense earthiness are possible. There is fine richness and volume to the round and delicious middle weight flavors that possess an appealing mouth feel and good length on the firm finish. A mid-term cellar candidate. 2016+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2012, Score: 16

Smudgy ripeness on the nose. Very sweet – lacks a bit of precision. Too flattering. Hint of coconut. Then a tart finish. Drink 2013-2018

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
