  • Goedhuis, April 2011, Score: 91-93

Another exciting wine from Haut Batailley, the 2010 delivers a pretty and lifted nose of sweet raspberry, spice and pencil lead. On the palate there is lots of elegance and lingering femininity. It finishes on dark chocolate and suave tannins. Fairly open-knit for a 2010, this looks like it will be at its optimum slightly earlier than many of its neighbours. RK

  • Neal Martin, June 2017, Score: 92+

Tasted at a vertical tasting at the château. The 2010 Haut Batailley is beginning to reach the potential I enthused about when I first tasted this from barrel. Much like the 2009 Haut-Batailley, it has a very expressive bouquet that needs a lot of coaxing from the glass. And like many 2010s it is a broody bugger, stubborn and obdurate but when you get to the palate...this is where the action is! This is where the quality positively shines through with very fine tannin: extremely pure fruit, a judicious touch of spice and a long and tender finish that is seamless. It needs 8-10 years for those aromatics to open but judging by the quality of the palate, it will be worth the wait. Tasted July 2016.

  • Neal Martin, February 2013, Score: 92

The Haut-Batailley immediately displays more fruit intensity on the nose with blackberry, graphite, flint and dried pressed flowers. It is well defined and blossoms with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and crisp brambly black fruit laced with graphite and a touch of cracked black pepper. It is a "classic" Haut-Batailley for sure, foursquare and beautifully balanced with a refined, rather aristocratic finish. Very fine.

  • Neal Martin, March 2011, Score: 92-94

The Haut-Batailley '10 is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. It has what you mightdescribe as a very "natural" bouquet with wild blackberry, raspberry, just a touch of pencil lead and wet limestone. Not an intense nose, but very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with very precise tannins, good acidity, just a little hardness at the front-palate, but this will soften. The backbone is very impressive, the finish very masculine, classic, the Cabernet Sauvignon dominating and imparting great purity and expression of terroir. Superb. As always, one of Pauillac's over-looked gems. Drink 2017-2040.

  • Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 91

Sexy creme de cassis notes along with a big kiss of cedar wood, spice box and licorice are all present in this dense, ruby/purple-colored wine, which is lush and silky smooth, with opulence and early appeal. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years. Owned by Xavier Borie, the proprietor of the better-known Grand Puy Lacoste, this 2010 is a beauty and one of the strongest efforts he’s produced over recent years.

  • Robert Parker, April 2011, Score: 88-90

This is always the most St.-Julien-like of the Pauillacs (although occasionally Pichon-Lalande possesses a suave, St.-Julian character and less power than many Pauillacs). The dark ruby/purple-hued 2010 reveals sweet aromas of red and black currants, cedar and spicy background oak. It is an attractive, elegant, mid-weight wine with polished tannins as well as a restrained style. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Drink: 2011 - 2026

  • James Suckling, April 2011, Score: 92-93

An impressive intensity of fruit here, with blueberries and lemon character. Full and very well-integrated, with ultra-fine tannins and a long, long finish. Better than 2000?

  • Decanter, April 2011, Score: 17

Very good depth of elegant Cabernet fruit and lovely fragrance and lift, a perfectly poised Haut-Batailley. Drink 2015-25.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2011, Score: 16

Very deep purple. High toned with some mineral elements but on the palate a bit raw and lightish. More evolved than many. Gentle and easy - a very much less ambitious wine than its stablemate Grand Puy Lacoste. Drink 2017-2025

  • Wine Spectator, April 2011, Score: 90-93

This is ripe, with a lovely beam of cassis and blackberry well-harnessed by seamless acidity. The rounded, enticing finish has a dash of toasty vanilla that's well-embedded. -J.M.

Producer

Château Haut-Batailley

Château Haut-Batailley was bought by Jean-Charles Cazes of Ch Lynch Bages in 2017 from François-Xavier Borie. It has one of the highest vine densities in Bordeaux at 10,000 vines per hectare, and holds a superb location, neighbouring Chx Lynch Bages, Latour and Pichon Lalande.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
