  • Goedhuis, April 2011, Score: 92-94

A superb 2010 that delivers aromatic notes of toasty oak, sweet, succulent fruit and wonderful density and complexity. A poised, clean and refreshing Margaux that will drink nicely over the years. RK

  • Neal Martin, April 2020, Score: 92+

The 2010 Brane-Cantenac is bashful on the nose, quite tertiary with plenty of sous-bois and cigar humidor scents infusing the dusky black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity with a pure and quite persistent finish. Brane-Cantenac is not a Margaux predisposed towards blind peer group appraisals and I mistook its slight terseness as a shortcoming, whereas it is simply a wine that needs much more time and made to appear more austere than it is. Another bottle tasted around the same time correlated to previous reviews. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. 2028-2056

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 95

The 2010 Brane-Cantenac was picked September 27 to October 14. It remains closed on the nose despite vigorous aeration, although there are shards of light as it reveals gorgeous, stony black fruit and pencil lead aromas, plus a hint of iris. The palate is medium-bodied and incredibly well focused, displaying razor-sharp tannin and a balletic poise from start to finish that belies the awesome structure of this Margaux. It is almost clinical on the finish, completing a stunning Brane-Cantenac that has a long future ahead of it. A benchmark for Henri Lurton. Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château. Drink 2025 - 2055.

  • Neal Martin, April 2011, Score: 94-96

Tasted on three occasions, a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, raised in 70% new oak delivering 13.5% alcohol, the Brane-Cantenac 2010 has that trademark, very Pauillac style note, the Cabernet Sauvignon defining the nascent aromatics with graphite and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fully ripe tannins, a little conservative on the entry but fanning out beautifully on the tightly wound mid-palate. Judicious use of the fleshy Merlot to balance out the Cabernet, composed and very harmonious towards the "classic" finish.

  • Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 95+

With a gorgeously evolved, extremely complex bouquet of forest floor, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings and red and black currants, this full-bodied, dense, ruby/plum/purple-colored wine hits the palate with an opulent, fleshy, full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and a very layered, profoundly concentrated style that is, at the same time, both powerful and sublime. This gorgeous wine from proprietor Henri Lurton will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and evolve for 25-30 years. 95+

  • Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 93-96

After nearly two decades of mediocre performances, Brane Cantenac has been doing impressive work over the last decade. While the 2010 may not eclipse the 2009 or 2005, it is an exceptional wine from proprietor Henri Lurton. A dense purple color is accompanied by a floral-scented bouquet revealing notes of licorice, graphite and red as well as black currants. Layered, rich and concentrated, this impressively constructed, seamless Margaux has plenty of tannin, but it is buried under the extravagant fruit and glycerin. This rich, pure, authoritative 2010 should drink well young yet keep for 25-30+ years. Drink: 2011 - 2041

  • James Suckling, April 2011, Score: 91-92

Balanced and polished, with pretty tannins and an attractive fruit. Very elegant for the vintage. Lovely length to the wine.

  • Decanter, April 2011, Score: 18

Beautifully expressed Cabernet fruit, pure Margaux elegance that combines intensity and finesse, long flavours, excellent balance that shows up Brane's specific style. Drink 2016-30.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2011, Score: 17

Very dark and concentrated. Exotic nose with some spice and aromas of old-ladies' handbags. Reallyrather rewarding on the nose but on the palate it seems a little too sweet and soft. Then becomes a bit green and astringent. Awkward, though there are interesting elements here. Should come right in the end. Drink 2019-2029

  • Wine Spectator, April 2011, Score: 90-93

A fresh, floral style, with violet and rose aromas followed by a mix of vibrant red currant and blackberry fruit. The dusty finish has good underlying acidity, keeping it racy. -J.M.

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
