Tasting Notes

  • BURG

    Burghound, April 2012,
    Score: 91-94

A recalcitrant nose grudgingly offers up notes of cassis, plum, black cherry and floral nuances. There is a redoubtable size, weight and power to the overtly muscular flavors that are underpinned by excellent concentration and very firm but ripe tannins that impart a dusty texture to the explosively long finish. Like the Latricières, this seems to have everything that it needs except for first-rate complexity. My score assumes that this will arrive in time. 2015+.

Producer

Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.

Region

Bonnes Mares

Perched between Morey-St-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny in the heart of the Cotes de Nuits this Grand Cru appellation can balance the best characteristics of both. Bonnes Mares wines combine fragrance and femininity with body and power. A seductive combination indeed.
