  • Goedhuis, January 2011

One of Etienne's favourite vineyards, with its fine, intense and gamey wild berry flavours. This isa very broad wine with a structured intensity, providing it with great weight. The excellent ripeness of tannins help give it a very long and complete finish.

  • Burghound, January 2011, Score: 92-95

This is even more elegant with a classic Vosne nose that features a wonderful array of spice notes to the fresh and highly refined mostly black pinot fruit suffused aromas. The detailed, pure and energetic flavors possess an effortless grace and class as well as huge length. This is as good a Grivot Beaux Monts as I can ever remember seeing at such an early stage. Drink: 2021+.Comments: sweet spot outstanding!

  • Burghound, January 2012, Score: 94

This is notably more elegant and much cooler with a distinctly more classic Vosne nose that features a wonderful array of spice notes to the fresh and highly refined mostly black pinot fruit suffused aromas. The detailed, pure and energetic flavors possess an effortless grace and class as well as huge length on the moderately austere finish. This is as good a young Grivot Beaux Monts as I can ever remember seeing. Drink: 2021+.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
