Tasting Notes

  • BURG1

    Burghound, January 2011,
    Score: 93-95

Leriche told me that 2009 produced the best grapes that he had ever seen from this parcel. As is usually the case, this is the most elegant, the most complex and spiciest nose that also reflects notes of red berry, rose petal and hoisin, which is in keeping with the seductively textured, intense and unusually powerful flavors that possess excellent depth of material and huge length. This is a relatively big wine for the appellation though it's not especially structured and should drink well a decade or so from now. Drink: 2019+.Notes: from a .25 ha parcel that was planted in 1973 - an average vintage produces 3 barrels.Comments: don't miss!

Leriche told me last year that 2009 produced the best grapes that he had ever seen from this parcel. As is usually the case, this is the most elegant, complex and spiciest nose that also reflects notes of very ripe red berry, rose petals and hoisin. There is overt ripeness as well to the seductively textured, intense and unusually powerful flavors that possess excellent depth of material and huge length. This is a relatively big yet quite sophisticated wine where the tannins are fine but dense and this firm effort will require significant cellar time to reach its prime drinking point. Drink: 2024+.Notes: from a .25 ha parcel that was planted in 1973 - an average vintage produces 3 barrels.

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Romanée-Saint-Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
