Tasting Notes

  • BURG1

    Burghound, January 2011,
    Score: 91-94

Here the nose is actually quite similar to that of the Charmes though the rich, round and concentrated flavors are both bigger and firmer with robust and moderately rustic tannins that are in keeping with the broad-scaled, intense and powerful finish. This won't win any awards for elegance but it is a picture perfect version of a classic Mazoyères. Worth considering as this is excellent. Drink: 2024+.

    Burghound, January 2012,
    Score: 94

Here the nose is actually quite similar to that of the Charmes though it is slightly more deeply pitched. There is superb richness to the round and impressively concentrated big-bodied flavors that are both bigger and firmer with robust and moderately rustic tannins that are in keeping with the broad-scaled, intense and powerful finish. This isn't as refined as the Charmes but it is a picture perfect version of a classic Mazoyères. Well worth considering as this is excellent though note that plenty of patience will be required. Drink: 2024+.

Mazoyéres-Chambertin

Mazoyères-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the far south of Gevrey-Chambertin next to the Morey-St-Denis border. The vineyard lies on gravelly soil of no more than 30 to 40 cm in depth over the bare rock below. It is sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Mazoyères-Chambertin is lighter and more rounded than other Grand Cru Gevreys. The appellations of Mazoyères-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin can be used interchangeably.
