Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, January 2011

Stunning wild strawberry aromas, on the palate this is very fine and layered. A wine of real complexity with tremendous depth of fruit aided by firm but very ripe tannins. This is a wine that will age superbly and has huge long-term potential.

  • BURG

    Burghound, April 2012,
    Score: 93

Here the nose was going through that post-bottling phase of relatively strong reduction that often occurs. By contrast, there is good freshness and plenty of vivacity to the seductively textured, mouth coating and clearly very ripe medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and an abundance of both extract and mineral nuances. The underlying phenolics are admirably ripe and I like the overall sense of balance and sense of harmony on the long and very serious finish where a touch of wood arises just at the end. Note that my score obviously assumes that the reduction on the nose is nothing more than temporary. 2022+.

Producer

Domaine Simon Bize et Fils

Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune and two fine grand cru parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. It is now under the careful management of Chisa, the late Patrick Bize’s wife, and Marielle Grivot, Patrick’s sister. They like to continue his practice of whole bunch fermentation and gentle handling of the fruit during the vinification process. The result is always very stylish wines, which possess the sweetness of fruit and subtle core of tannins, which are such a character of the wines of Savigny.

Region

Latricières-Chambertin

Latricières-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the far south of Gevrey-Chambertin next to the Morey-St-Denis border. The vineyard lies on white oolite soils, sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Compared to other Grand Cru Gevrey, Latricières-Chambertin is not ultra-powerful and seems to exude a sublime lacy quality.
