Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, January 2011

Grippy, broad and velvety, Clos Prieur is a fine force to be reckoned with in 2009. A juicy core of sweet cherry and strawberry give way to roasted coffee, vanilla and spice. This is all Gevrey and a lot of wine for the price.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, January 2011,
    Score: 90-92

Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. This has a more forward, generous nose than the Au Closeau, though perhaps not quite the same level of clarity. The palate is lively and fresh on the entry, tart cherry fruit with tensile tannins with just a hint of sweet and sour towards the well-defined, tightly coiled mandarin-tinged finish. Very fine.

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2011,
    Score: 89-91

Reduction dominates the nose but there is good vibrancy to the rich and round ifslightly less complex medium-bodied flavors that are quite firm while evidencing a hint of animale on the delicious and mineraldriven finish. Solid if not truly special quality here.

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, January 2011,
    Score: 16.5

Subdued nose but there is obviously quite a bit of weight here. Very firm and introvert but with a fair whack of fruit. Very lively and vital.

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Gevrey-Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
