Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2010

We've always loved this wine and the 2009 exceeds our expectations. Deep in colour, the 2009 Gabyis lavish on the palate with sweet notes of wild bramble fruit, roasted coffee and gentle spice. Incredibly mouthfilling while remaining fresh and complex. A fine wine that will age beautifully.

    Jancis Robinson, November 2010,
    Score: 16+

Already in bottle. Fresh tobacco-leaf nose. Very sweet palate attack and fresh, if not exactly dense, on the palate. Still very youthful.

Producer

Domaine du Colombier

This 16 hectare estate is run by brothers Florent and David Viale and produces a dark, bold interpretation of Hermitage. These wines are brawny and powerful, and have a distinctive flavour palette of black fruits, black olive tapenade, and graphite smokiness. Although grape growers for almost a century, the family only began to bottle their own wines in the early 1990s. Their wines may take a little time to come around, but will reward in the long run.

Region

Crozes-Hermitage

The northern Rhône's largest appellation, Crozes-Hermitage produces approximately 8 times more than its more distinguished neighbour, Hermitage. Crozes, too, has both red and whites similar to Hermitage and in many ways is very similar in style, though less concentrated and complex. Plump, silky and smooth, they are usually made for early consumption; however certain producers have been known to make Crozes-Hermitages which need to cellared for several years and can be further kept for up to a decade.
