Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, February 2011

Wonderfully perfumed red chery aromas, in the palate this wine balances great richness and lovely textured fruit, with complexly layered spiced charactersitics. A wine with real breadth and depth that will age superbly. A superb example of this great Grand Cru

  • BURG1

    Burghound, May 2011,
    Score: 91-94

A bright and unusually expressive nose given the way this wine usually shows offers up notes of warm earth and ripe red currants that give way to detailed, intense and moderately austere medium-weight flavors that at present display good but not truly special depth on the reasonably persistent finish. This is not showing a great deal at present and while it’s not one-dimensional, it’s certainly not at the same level as the best of the grands crus. Still, and while it’s admittedly only my taster’s intuition speaking, I feel as though this will develop much more in time than it’s presently showing and my score reflects that optimism. 2024+.

  • BURG

    Burghound, April 2012,
    Score: 91

A bright and unusually expressive nose, given the way this wine usually shows, offers up notes of warm earth and ripe red currants that give way to detailed, intense and moderately austere medium-weight flavors that at present display good but not truly special depth on the reasonably persistent and ever-so-slightly sweet and warm finish. This is not showing a great deal at present and while it’s not one-dimensional, it’s certainly not at the same level as the best of the grands crus. Indeed, it really hasn’t changed much at all since I last tasted it from cask and while it may still develop along the lines that it often does, for now I will remain cautious. On the plus side, there is fine underlying material but it remains to be seen whether it can develop the excellent depth that this wine is usually known for. 2024+.

Producer

Maison Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859 by Louis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot has always been situated in the centre of Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. Managed by three generations of the Jadot family and then by the Gagey family assisted by Jacques Lardière in the cellar, Jadot is now directed by Pierre Henry Gagey, who has introduced a new wine making team, Frédéric Barnier and Guillaume Large. Since careful ageing in wooden barrels is so very important for the balance, aromas and the ageing potential of a great wine, in 1996, Louis Jadot entered into partnership with a firm of coopers, forming Cadus Cooperage, established in Ladoix Serrigny. This allows them to control their wood sourcing and the barrel production. Maison Louis Jadot now controls 105 hectares in Burgundy with more than 70 hectares in the Côte d'Or, exclusively in Premier and Grand Cru. They produce both negociant wines under the Maison Louis Jadot label and a number of Domaines: Gagey, Duc de Magenta, Louis Jadot and Héritiers de Louis Jadot.
