Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, January 2011
Clos de Vougeots from all over the Côte hit their sweet spot in 2009 and Philippe's is noexception. A deep, rich nose of black cherries and succulent red plums leads to a vinous and ever so slightly ‘wild' palate. Well-paced, refined and round, this is a wonderfully balanced wine thatwill deliver lots of pleasure.

Neal Martin, January 2011,
Score: 93-95Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. This has quite a strict bouquet, good mineralité showing through with fine definition, developing some lovely rose petal aromas with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with taut tannins, very good focus and a Vosne-like precision and poise, sorbet orange on the fresh, lively finish. Excellent.
-
Burghound, January 2011,
Score: 92-94This is also backwards and inexpressive with a ripe nose ofred and blue berry fruit aromas that are cut with notes of earth, underbrush and a slightly sauvage hint that is reflected by thedense, serious and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that possess a highly-textured mouth feel on the youthfully austere andquite firmly structured finish. A classic Clos de Vougeot.

Jancis Robinson, January 2011,
Score: 16.5+Lots of rather leafy personality here. Reasonable concentration but not enough wow for the money. Competent rather than thrilling.

Producer
Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
