Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, January 2011
A delicious Clos de la Roche that is beautifully ample with notes of sweet cherries, caramel and aromatic spice. Pure and demonstrative, it was one of the most open of Nicolas' Grand Crus that wasdestined to please. Mineral tang finish.

Neal Martin, January 2011,
Score: ?The Clos de la Roche lacks a little vigour on the nose; the palate quite chewy and assertive. Fully ripe tannins but I feel it is missing just a little acidity. The finish has a lot of chutzpah with grippy ripe red-berried fruits, but it does not quite express the terroir as well as Potel's other 09s. Perhaps picked a day or two late? Tasted January 2011.

Jancis Robinson, January 2011,
Score: 16.5Sweet and rich and round but without the thrill factor of a really good Clos de la Roche.

Producer
Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.
Region
Clos de la Roche
The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
