    La Conseillante is one of the great terroirs of the right bank which is most certainly highlighted in this superbly balanced wine. Full of red fruits and purity, this is graceful and pure, focusing on elegance and balance. An almost faultless wine with a long refined finish. Very special indeed.

    The 2009 La Conseillante has an opulent, expressive bouquet that blooms from the glass with enticing brambly red fruit, sage, black truffle and peppermint aromas, all very well defined. The aromatics seem to intensify with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that frames the layers of red fruit. This is a more savory, gourmand style of La Conseillante. You could actually broach bottles of the 2009 now thanks to its freshness, although I would prefer to wait since there is so much weight and density on the finish. It is a huge, voluminous La Conseillante. But if you want the intellect and sophistication, you have to aim for the 2010. Tasted at La Conseillante vertical at the property. 2019-2040

    The competition between the 2009, 2005 and 2000 La Conseillante will be interesting to follow over the next twenty years. There was more of a selection process at this estate in 2009 than there was in 2000, resulting in a beautiful Pomerol offering notes of mulberries, sweet cherries, spring flowers, raspberries and truffles. The color is a healthy deep plum/ruby/purple and the wine is medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, a broad, layered mouthfeel and wonderful freshness as well as length. This gorgeous, complex, Burgundian-styled Pomerol will be drinkable in 4-6 years and should keep for 30-40. (The 1970 is still alive and that was not nearly as well made as the 2009.) Drink: 2016 - 2056

    Now that La Conseillante is making a second wine with more severe selection, think of the 2009 as a version of the 2000 on steroids. This is never going to be a blockbuster wine, because the terroir just seems to produce silky, elegant wines, but in this case, the 2009 has an extra kick and level of concentration that is unprecedented. Inky bluish purple, with an extraordinary nose of framboise, black raspberries, spring flowers, spice box, and a hint of truffle, the wine has great depth, full-bodied opulence, silky tannins, enormous power and richness, but again, a vibrancy and uplift that are just freakish in this vintage. That's one of the great hallmarks of 2009 and onethat will always stand out over the next 30 years. This wine should be drinkable in 5-7 years and last 40 or more. Drink: 2015 - 2055

    Remains true to the refined, elegant house style but with added depth and concentration. Lovely fruit. Smooth, velvety tannins. Brilliant wine. Drink 2020-2040.

Château la Conseillante

Many experts consider this an atypical wine, often more reminiscent of grand cru red Burgundy than a heavy weight Pomerol. Its exceptional terroir places it on the Pomerol/St. Emilion border surrounded by Cheval Blanc, Vieux Château Certan, L'Evangile and Pétrus.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
