Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, October 2014
For the quality of wine which it produces, in our opinion Ch Clauzet should be considerably better known, This complex wine highlights, the depth and weighty structure for which St Estephe is famed with the open fruit charms of the 2009 vintage – a perfect combination. Strong full herbal aromas with hints of eucalyptus and cigar box, this is a mouth coating wine, with layered flavours of fruit and tannic structure. A wine with real class and great length on the finish. Top class.

Goedhuis, April 2010,
Score: 89Perfumed and lifted with silky smooth, well-built tannins and lots of velvety fruit. The St. Estèphe terroir kicks in on the finish adding depth and length. A fine Clauzet.
-
Decanter, January 2013,
Score: 17.25Quite elegant and surprisingly gentle for the appellation. Shows length, class and the joy and charm of the year. Has lovely concentration of black fruit, fine, integrated tannins and a pretty and long finish. Good quality here! Drink 2013–2020

Producer
Château Clauzet

Ch Clauzet has been owned by Baron Velge since 1997. He hired well-known technical director, José Bueno, previously cellar master for Baron Philippe de Rothschild for 23 years. Some excellent wines have been produced since he took over.
Region
St Estèphe
St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
