Goedhuis, september 2011
"Stunningly dense deep opaque colour, this wine has wonderfully exuberant dark berried aromas. A very rich wine full of naturally structured intensity, beautifully supported by a natural freshness of fruit providing a lovely long clean and complex wine. This is Argentina absolutely at its best - balanced, structured and hugely appealing. Beautiful now, but has real ageing potential."

Wine Advocate, Decemebr 2011, Score: 92
The 2009 Caro Blend is made up of 60% Malbec and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 18 months in 80% new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is a serious wine with a Bordeaux-like personality. Captivating aromas of sandalwood, exotic spices, violets, leather, and assorted black fruits titillate the nose while pointing to a full-bodied, plush, layered wine that manages to stay light on its feet despite its size. It is the best Caro that I have tasted to date and mandates another 3-4 years of cellaring, reaching its peak from 2015 to 2029.

A possible partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite and the Catenafamily was first mooted in 1988. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce asingle wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Catena family has produced wine for threegenerations. Consequently, it was able to draw on its vast knowledge of the high altitude terroirs of the Mendoza region as well as its passion for Malbec. DBR-Lafite contributed its centuries-old skills in growing, vinifying and ageing great Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as its know-how in blending different grape varieties to produce one wine that is greater than the sum of its parts. Located in the heart of the Mendoza region, the winery at Bodegas Caro is also at the centre of the Caro project. The wines have been made here since the 2002 vintage and work is still in progress in the cellar to further improve facilities.Read less

Region
Mendoza
Mendoza is the largest viticultural region in Argentina, located in the west of Argentina around the city of the same name. The region accounts for more than two-thirds of the country's total wineproduction, which focuses on red wine production. Malbec is the most important grape variety but Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, among many others, are also grown. Central Mendoza has the longest tradition for fine wine production as the climate is temperate and the soils are unusually gravelly for Argentina as elsewhere in Mendoza soils are typically alluvial and sandy.
