Burghound, January 2010, Score: 91-94
Here the nose is very pinot with an ultra fresh and layered nose that possesses plenty of Gevrey character, especially pungent earth and a hint of animale, which continues onto the bigger and richer but not necessarily more precise or focused big-bodied flavors that are powerful and possess excellent volume, all wrapped in a hugely complex finish. Patience required. Drink: 2018+.

Burghound, January 2011, Score: 93
Here the mildly oaky nose is very pinot with ultra fresh and layered aromas that possess plenty of Gevrey character with their pungent earth and a hint of animale, both of which continue onto the rich, attractively precise and focused big-bodied flavors that are powerful and possess excellent volume, all wrapped in a wonderfully complex finish. Patience required. Drink: 2020+.Notes: from a .33 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines in Charmes proper.

Region
Charmes Chambertin
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
