This Right Bank estate is fast becoming an extremely hot property, and it’s no wonder with the quality of the wines it has been producing over the past decade lifting it from respectable St Emilion up to the heights of one of the leading properties in the whole appellation. Beautiful violet aromas with black fruit tones. This is a wonderfully polished wine with crisp tannins and an incredibly refined fruit core, and delivers the best of St Emilion.

More in the Figeac style of St. Emilion, the 2008 Canon offers a restrained nose and a minerally-tight palate that delivers incredible concentration, complexity and balance. This wine is just aching to reveal its impressive layers of sweet fruit, gently roasted spice and earthy notes.

The 2008 Canon has a simple bouquet compared to the riveting 2015 that I tasted alongside at the property, however, you cannot begrudge this Saint Émilion that offers attractive black fruit, a pinch of pepper, iodine and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, red and black fruit mixed with baking powder and a slight savoriness that comes through on the finish. Impressive length here: a fine if maybe slightly "uncouth" Canon that probably needs another year in bottle. (Tasted at the château and at BI Wine Spirit’s annual vertical tasting.) 2019-2035

Ever since its showing out of barrel, the Chateau Canon 2008 has been on an upward trajectory. Here, it displays fine mineralite on the nose, very precise with black rather than red fruit with great delineation, notes of iodine emerging. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, pure dark berry fruit with a touch of spice, focused with a symmetrical finish. This is very assured and just delicious.

Although reserved and shut down following bottling, the 2008 exhibits a dense plum/ruby/purple color, abundant tannin, an unmistakable minerality and a long finish despite its structured, backward, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Sweet blue and black fruits have to be coaxed from the glass. Cellar it for 5-7 years and enjoy it over the following 20-25. Drink: 2016 - 2041

This appears to be the finest wine made under the relatively recent ownership of the Wertheimer brothers (who also own the haute couture house of Chanel). Sweet raspberry, blue fruit, crushed rock, and acacia flower characteristics are followed by a fresh, lively, full-bodied wine that offers an alliance of power, substance, and finesse. With good purity, texture, and length, this beauty will require patience as the tannins, while sweet and velvety, are noticeable. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.

Château Canon
Château Canon is located on rich limestone soil slopes southwest of the town of St Emilion. It is known for its muscular style which when young can be quite backward and tight but with age can evolve beautifully. Now owned by Chanel, who have invested heavily, Canon is going from strength to strength.
Region
St Emilion
South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
