The 2007 was the coolest vintage experienced at Numanthia. The 2007 Termanthia show more oak on the nose, heady scents of camphor and wild honey infusing the ripe red berry fruit. The palate is full-bodied with decadent ripe red fruit but here, unlike the previous two vintages, I am missing the requisite tension and precision to maintain balance. The finish is very sweet and candied, which makes me wonder whether drinking more than one glass might be a law of diminishing returns? Still, it has good cohesion on the finish, but it is not a flattering Termanthia when compared directly against, say, the 2005 or 2008.

NHB. Bright crimson. Very light nose. So concentrated and introvert that I find it difficult to discern. Lots of oak but where’s the fruit? Drying finish. Drink 2013-2017

Region

Toro

Heading towards the Portuguese border to the far west of the River Duero lies Toro. These high altitude vineyards (600 - 750 meters) span the banks of the river on dry stony soils. Tinta de Toro is the local variant of Tempranillo which used to produce rich alcoholic wines. Awarded DO status in 1987, it was in the mid-1990s that the region's potential was spotted. Since then the number of bodegas has rocketted and there has been major investment which clearly shows in the end result. Ripe, fruity and distinctly Spanish these are mini-Riberas!
