Goedhuis, February 2009
A spectacular array of aromatics surge from the glass in this incredibly concentrated and powerful red. Pronounced notes of ripe blackberries, sweet red cherries, a palette of spices and lacy violets open up to a profound, velvety palate. A tour de force, this wine should be incredibly long lived yet remains opulent enough to be wonderfully hedonistic.

Domaine de Trévallon is a cult wine producer located in the rolling hills west of St Rémy de Provence, and originally created by Eloi Dürrbach in 1973. An architect student at the time, he decided to toss aside his protractors to roll up his sleeves and start planting vines in the craggy limestone rock soil surrounding his parents' holiday home. His instincts told him that thedomaine's well draining, mineral-rich soil, arid microclimate and glorious sun would be capable ofproducing exceptionally powerful and expressive wines...and he was right. He planted 15 hectares of Syrah and Cabernet which he then followed with a smattering of Marsanne, Roussanne (from cuttings at Beaucastel) and Chardonnay. Besides using organic viticultural methods, his winemaking is notably natural as well. After handpicking, he ferments the bunches whole without de-stemming, with indigenous yeasts and without temperature control. The wine is matured in large oak foudres for around 2 years before being bottled. Due to the addition of Cabernet, appellation rules insisted in 1993 that his wine must be labelled as a regional Vins de Pays rather than the local AOC, Côteaux d'Aix. Despite the controversialruling, he never looked back. Now, his wines are some of the most sought after in France regardless of their appellation.Read less

Vin de Pays
Originally intended to denote simple country wines that showed broad regional characteristics, the Vin de Pays category now includes many shining stars that fall outside the strict appellation regulations.
