Tasted from the chateau reserves at the estate, once again the nose is very closed at first, faint touches of lemon rind, dried apricot and tangible mineralite that is far more prominent that exhibited on the ’08 or ’09. The nose is almost exactly the same as the bottle in October 2010, but this sample demonstrating more harmony and cohesion towards the finish. The Sauvignon Blanc is imparting hints of Green apple and gooseberry to counterbalance that rich botrytized fruit. Superb. Tasted February 2011.

The nose takes time to coalesce in the glass, very pure with honey, white peach, Turkish Delight honeysuckle, and beeswax. The palate is beautifully balanced, still with some oak to be subsumed, but has great depth and precision. This is a confident, almost ambitious Suduiraut with great power and intensity towards the botrytis-rich, viscous finish that is endowed with great persistency. Lovely. Drink now-2030.

From a blend made one month ago (in two barrels.) This has a well-defined nose, complex with touches of clear honey, acacia, hints of orange-blossom. Very well focused on the palate, with superb marriage of nervosité (from the first two tries) and the botrytis concentration of the later tries. Citrus fruits, a touch of orange zest towards the finish. Not a rich, weighty, viscous Suduiraut, this is more about tension and vibrancy. An understated Suduiraut for the vintage but well-crafted. Drink 2010-2030. Tasted April 2008.

Green gold. Muted, almost dry nose. Very sweet start though a little on the hot barley sugar side rather than wonderfully fine and nuanced. A bit sugary. Astringent finish but massive sugar levels even if not fine. Chewy end. Gone for bust! Not quite as fine at this stage as I have come to expect of this property. Drink 2017-27.

Château Suduiraut

The vineyard of Suduiraut covers 200 hectares, of which 92 hectares of vines are planted in sandy, clayey soil. Due to the proximity of the Ciron and Garonne rivers, a perfect microclimate exists for the developmet of "noble rot" so necessary in the production of this great Sauternes. The wines of Château Suduiraut are elegant, sweet and full-bodied with remarkable life expectancy. they are a beautiful golden colour with amber tints when aged. they have harmony, power, complexity and finesse: it is often said that a great Suduiraut is the essence of Sauternes.

Region

Sauternes

It is not an exaggeration to say that these are the greatest sweet wines in the world. They are the result of a serendipitous marriage of grape variety, location, annual weather conditions and human care and determination. The vineyards are located on the banks of the cool spring-fed Ciron river which, in autumn, flows into the warmer tidal Garonne and creates rolling evening mists which clothe the vines until the afternoon sun burns them off the following day. This cycle creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea or noble rot, and the resulting grape juice is a super concentrated sweet, ambrosial nectar which makes the most heavenly and complex wines with extraordinary ability to age. In 1855 the wines were classified into first and second growths, with Ch d'Yquem rightly receivingits own super status of premier grand cru. Other stunning wines include Chx Sudiraut, Rieussec, Coutet and Climens. While seductively fragrant and sweet when young, if you can bear to wait, you will be amply rewarded with lusciously rich, exotically complex wine.
