Tasting Notes

Neal Martin, June 2017,
Score: 91Tasted at BI Wine Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Rauzan-Segla (Rausan-Segla) has a wonderful bouquet of dark red brambly fruit, sandalwood, sage and cloves—aromatics that convey a sense of warmth and homeliness. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannin on the entry; there is truffle-infused black fruit, sea salt and a healthy pinch of spice, leading to a refined, almost Pomerol-like finish. The acidity feels a little lower than other coeval vintages, affording it a sense of approachability, almost "easy-drinking" in nature. Delicious—that sums this Margaux up in a word. Tasted February 2017. 91/100. Drink 2017-2029

Robert Parker, April 2010,
Score: 89+This substantial 2007 (a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot) exhibits a deep ruby/purple-tinged color along with a big, sweet kiss of licorice, forest floor, tobacco leaf, black currants, and cherries. It possesses a lovely texture, a round, ample mouthfeel, sweet tannin, and low acidity. It is drinking well now, and should continue to evolve for a decade or more. Drink: 2010 - 2020

Château Rauzan-Ségla

Originating in the 17th century, Rauzan Sègla was created by Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan whopurchased large tracts of land which included neighbouring Rauzan Gassies, Desmirail and Marquisde Terme. Within a short period of time, Rauzan Sègla became high on collectors lists rivallingLéoville, Gruaud Larose and Mouton Rothschild. One of its followers included Thomas Jeffersonwho purchased several cases of the 1790 vintage. Over the years it was divided and sold on to various owners falling deeper and deeper into oblivion until the 1980s when its old, wooden vats were replaced with stainless steel and excellent clones of Cabernet Sauvignon replaced the tired Merlot. In 1994, the château was taken over by Chanel who have continued this drive for quality.
Region
Margaux
Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
