Goedhuis, January 2008
Les Murgers is located next to Boudots and close to Vosne Romanée. Due to its more northerlylocation, it tends to produce wines that have a bit more finesse than more southern planted Nuits. This is definitely true in his 2006 which displays pretty floral and red cherry aromatics and anethereal quality that just leaves one's palate singing. Drink 2010 - 2018+.
Burghound, January 2008,
(From .48 ha parcel of 70+ year old vines). A marginally riper nose of spicy dark berryfruit is, somewhat surprisingly, even more elegant as are the sleekly muscled, rich, full and sweet flavors that possess better length but not quite the same depth. A qualitative choice though the personalities of these two wines are indeed distinctly different. (89-92)/2014+Comments: outstanding!
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard
Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
