Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, January 2008

Clos Prieur is situated across the road from Mazis Chambertin. Spicy and fleshy, this 2006 displays notes of maple syrup, black cherry and dark bramble fruit. Its palate is tender and velvety though its power surfaces on the finish. Drink 2012 - 2022+.

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2008,
    Score: 89-91

There is a deft touch of wood framing the equally fresh and wonderfully expressivenose that blends red pinot fruit, iron-infused earth and a hint of underbrush where the latter element is picked up on the delicious, intense and focused medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of personality on the admirably persistent backend. There is a bit more overall depth here and this too should age well over the next decade. (89-91)/2013+

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Gevrey-Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
