  • Goedhuis, January 2008

A fraternal twin to King Chambertin, Clos de Bèze is somewhat larger and farther up the slope where the soil is slightly shallower. It has been said that this lack of soil imparts a more elegant and feminine feel. This can be hard to tell with Philippe's version, but in 2006 he has produced apretty, silky and refined Clos de Bèze. It finishes long, focused and pure. Quietly confident. Drink 2012 - 2024+.

  • Burghound, January 2008, Score: 91-94

(from a parcel of 1.5 ha of vines planted in 1949). As one would expect, this isconsiderably more refined if not necessarily more complex with a layered and wonderfully nuanced nose of clove, anise and crushed pepper adding interest to the mostly red berry fruits that display bass notes of earth, game and underbrush. The bigboned flavors are mouth coating and dusty but avoid any sense of underlying dryness on the classy, serious and hugely long finish. A beast but a well-mannered one. (91-94) 2018+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2008, Score: 18.5

Very sweet and gentle and utterly beguiling. Great clarity and richness to boot. Lots of structure though so don't rush! Drink 2013 - 2020.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Chambertin Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other appellation in Burgundy. Unusually wines from Clos de Beze may simply call themselves Chambertin, which is an indicator of the quality of these vineyards. One of the most complete of all the Grand Crus, rivalling the revered Romanee-Conti, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wines are the pinnacle of Pinot Noir - fragrant, powerfully complex and intense.
