Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, April 2013

Deep ruby in colour, this has a rich and opulent palate highlighting the high proportion of Merlot in the blend. A very attractive and giving wine with sweet plum fruit flavours supported by a very stylish tannic content. This is long and classy as one would expect from one of the best positioned vineyards in Pomerol.

    Robert Parker, Feb 2009,
    Score: 88

Complex notes of wood spice, cedar, and resiny pine forest along with kirsch and earth make for a complex aromatic display. In the mouth, this wine is fresh, medium-bodied, not very concentrated, but elegant and alluring in a sensual, seductive style. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Drink: 2009 - 2017

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, May 2007,
    Score: 16.5

Mid crimson. Hint of buckwheat simple sweetness. Slightly astringent. Hint of port. Very sweet and round and pure pleasure but perhaps for only the short term. The tannins are just fine.

Producer

Château la Croix de Gay

Ch La Croix de Gay sits at the northern end of Pomerol not far from Hosanna and Petrus. Run by a brother and sister team, Alain Raynaud and Chantal Lebreton, the quality has been steadily improving and this is often one of the most approachable and best value Pomerols of a vintage. They also make the highly sought after Ch La Fleur de Gay from a tiny parcel of old vines.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
