Burghound, January 2007, Score: 91-93
A positively gorgeous mix of exuberantly spicy red and black pinot fruit aromas that offer genuinely striking purity and transparency can also be found on the rich, textured and ultra refined middle weight flavors that are balanced and possess terrific mid-palate fat that completely buffers the rather firm tannic spine. But it's the sheer complexity that really drives this to the next level and it knocks on the door of grand cru quality. In sum, this transcends its usual quality level by a fair margin and should reward up to a decade of cellar time. Drink: 2013+.Notes: 45 year old vines.Comments: outstanding!

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region
Vosne Romanée
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
