Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, January 2007

Bursting with crunchy black and red cherries and red currants on the nose, Drouhin Laroze'sLatricières was particularly brooding on the palate. Powerful with notable weight and concentration it finishes long on granite and earthy flavours.

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2007,
    Score: 91-94

This more closely resembles the Lavaut in style and elegance with cool and mineral-infused high-toned red berry fruit aromas that are less expressive, even reserved with detailed, indeed chiseled flavors that are built on a base of intense minerality, all wrapped in a powerful and mouth coating linear finish. There is a certain austerity here at present that will require more than a decade to fully flesh out. (91-94)/2017+

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, January 2007,
    Score: 18-18.5

Deep blueish crimson. Sweet and rich and lively. Very focused. Modern style but lots of pleasure. Long and lively. Very muscular. (JR) Deep and purplish. Sweet dusty white peppered fruit. Great backbone of fine sandy tannins, dark fruit, waiting to explode. Powerful without show. Very very good. (JH)

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Latricières-Chambertin

Latricières-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the far south of Gevrey-Chambertin next to the Morey-St-Denis border. The vineyard lies on white oolite soils, sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Compared to other Grand Cru Gevrey, Latricières-Chambertin is not ultra-powerful and seems to exude a sublime lacy quality.
