Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, January 2007
One of our favourites of the tasting, Nicolas' Clos de la Roche is powerful with lots of chunky density and texture that is reminiscent of a Chambertin yet with friendly Morey-styled fruit. Finishes on cherry compote and caramelized almonds.
-
Burghound, January 2007,
Score: 92-94A flat out gorgeous nose features violets, red pinot fruit and black berry notes trimmed in a deft touch of wood that gives way to rich, full and sweet flavors that possess unusually good detail, all wrapped in a powerful, deep and exceptionally long finish. This is also impeccably well balanced and should improve for at least a decade. (92-94)/2015+

Jancis Robinson, January 2007,
Score: 17.5Flattering, sweet nose. Then great juicy fruit on the palate with real energy. Lively and fresh too. A hint of coffee. Quite lean. Pure, very fruity - almost unnervingly so!

Producer
Maison Nicolas Potel

Nicolas grew up amongst the vineyards of Domaine de la Pousse d'Or where his father was winemaker and part owner for years. Unfortunately, Burgundy vineyards cost more than gold, so when Nicolas decided to set out on his own, he realised that the only feasible way would be to buy grapes from other producers and work as a négociant. He differs from others in the region in that most of his grapes now come from only 8 domaines that he manages himself. As a result, he is able to grow the grapes according to his specifications. Being a perfectionist, his parameters include organic farming methods as well as notably small yields.
Region
Clos de la Roche
The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
