Château d'Aiguilhe

Stephan von Neipperg (of Château Canon-La-Gaffelière, Clos l'Oratoire, Château Peyreau and La Mondotte) decided to leave his mark on Château d'Aiguilhe, one of the finest vineyards in the Côtes de Castillon. The château is located on a rocky aiguille (French for "needle" or "peak"). Legend has it that a Gallo-Roman villa existed at "Aiguille", and that it was once a commandery of the Knights Templar, who used it as a base from which to defend a nearby path used by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.Today, Château d'Aiguilhe has 65 hectares, of which 37 are devoted to producing wine and expertly managed by oenologist Jean-Patrick Meyrignac. The average age of the vines is 28 years. It benefits from the tried and tested winegrowing methods used by Stephan von Neippergat on his Saint-Emilion estates: letting the terroir express itself fully, low yields, and a very flexible approach to winemaking.
Region
Côtes de Castillon
Lying directly to the east of St Emilion with vineyards running from the river Dordogne up into the rolling hills, Côtes de Castillon is an area which produces reliable, good value reds from Merlot. In particular certain wine estates have been purchased by the owners of more illustrious Right Bank properties, such as the Thienpont and von Neipperg families. The consequent input of investment and expertise has seen the quality of Côtes de Castillon wines soar.
