  • Goedhuis, May 2005, Score: -

The tasting room at Ch Lafite is decked with magnificent, huge portraits of the team taken by photographer Richard Avedon. Eric de Rothschild, with an extravagant flower in his buttonhole, Charles Chevalier looking pensive, a maitre de chai with a luxuriant moustache. However it is the wine that grabs ones attention. This Lafite is utterly delicious. The blend this year is 90.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot. Long, fine and elegant but with the serious tannins of the vintage, this is only rivalled by Latour in complexity and class.Drink 2015-2035

  • Robert Parker, June 2007, Score: 95

This beautiful, stunningly dense purple-colored effort (includes about 90% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers up precise notes of graphite, black cherries, cassis, scorched earth, and minerals. Medium to full-bodied with fabulous fruit, impressive richness, refreshing acidity, and sweet tannin, this beauty should be approachable in 4-5 years, and last for three decades. As Lafite Rothschilds go, this is somewhat of a sleeper vintage. Also tasted: 2004 Carruades de Lafite (88). Drink 2009-2039

  • Robert Parker, June 2006, Score: 92-95

Only 40% of the crop made it into the 2004 grand vin, which is the antithesis of the opulent, powerful, concentrated 2003. The linear, elegant 2004 is a classic Lafite, revealing cassis, raspberry, graphite, and new earth-like characteristics. With terrific concentration, medium body, fresh acidity, and a vibrant, stylish taste, this blend of 90.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 0.5% Petit Verdot. Drink 2010-2030 One of the better wines of the vintage, the elegantly-styled 2004 Lafite Rothschild reveals hints of lead pencil, crushed rocks, flowers, creme de cassis, and cranberries. Medium-bodied with considerable finesse, length, ripeness, and structure, this blend of 90.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and a dollop of Petit Verdot requires 3-5 years of cellaring. Drink 2009-2039

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2005, Score: 18

Excellent depth of purplish crimson. Something quite sweetly aromatic on the nose – violets? vanilla? Rather more solid than I would have expected from Lafite in a year like this. Definitely earth-bound. Very solid, and lower in acidity than I would expect. While, unlike Mouton, it's obviously Pauillac, it's less obviously Lafite than in some other years. Very dryfinish. Very correct but reticent. Drink 2025-2038

One peek into Château Lafite's cellar is like entering into the 18th century. Its cobweb-covered chandeliers subtly light shadowy corridors that play host to hundreds of ancient vintages. Nothing could be more representative of its wine making philosophy - classic, stylish and yet powerful - characteristics that have made it one of the most collectible wines in the world. Situated in the north of Pauillac, Château Lafite-Rothschild sits on gravel soils with bits of limestone scattered in the mix. It is one of the largest estates in the Medoc and one of the most prominent, the wines exude elegance and finesse. The vineyard is laid out to mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) with the rest comprising Merlot (25%) Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The second wine, Carruades de Lafite, has a slightly more Merlot than the Grand Vin and is thus more approachable in its youth.Read less

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
