Goedhuis, May 2005, Score: -
Claire Villars-Lurton has worked wonders at Haut Bages Liberal in her ultra modern winery which would not be out of place at Cape Canaveral. However the wines remain firmly rooted in the tradition of top quality Pauillac. This is without doubt one of our picks of the vintage and also offers excellent value. It is extremely stylish and poised with utterly delicious bittersweet fruit and very fine tannins. Jancis Robinson gives it a great score for a wine at this price.Highly recommended. Drink 2010-2020=

Robert Parker, June 2007, Score: 90
Another sleeper of the vintage, this under-priced, beautifully made Pauillac exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, licorice, tapenade, and spice box. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin and low acidity, it is a pure, expressive wine to drink over the next 12-15 years. Drink 2007-2022

Jancis Robinson, April 2005, Score: 17
Liquid purple, relatively opulent on the nose. Quite deep and trying very hard. Attractive spiciness and no excess of dryness of tannin. Well managed and well balanced. The only reproach one might make is that it is a little mild and low key – but then so is Lafite. Quite a bit of weight. Very vigorous. Very good! Very fine tannins, there in abundance. Drink 2013-2020

Similar to Lynch Bages, Haut Bages Libéral is also named after the plateau ("bages") on which it sits. Region
Pauillac
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
