Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis
Amazing concentration here with great depth of black cherry and damson fruit. Compact and brooding this will make very old bones.
-
Burghound, January 2005,
Score: 90-93The quality here is far superior to the preceding wines as this is aromatically rich, intense and utterly classy with robust yet remarkably fine and refined flavors that combine power, weight and depth in a ripe but elegant package. Lovely stuff and this is really most impressive. Drink: 2011+.Notes: from yields of 28 hl/ha.
-
Jancis Robinson, January 2005,
Score: 18Full, round, and rather seductive. Spreads over the palate, but ultimately a bit too simple for the price. Fine, but Drink 2007-17

Producer
Domaine René Engel

Domaine René Engel is between Nuits St. George and Gevrey-Chambertin, in the heart of one of the smallest communes but also one of the most prestigious, that René Engel founded the Domaine that bears his name. In 1981 Philippe Engel took over the domaine following his father's death. Philippe cares for thevineyard by replanting dead vine stock, purifying soil impoverished by potassium and reducing yields by means of a very severe selection of grapes using a sorting table. In the realm of vinification, he has replaced old barrels and has introduced more frequent racking. Light filtering has allowed him to produce more expressive wines gaining a reputation as fat, authentic and elegant. Recently joined by his brother Frédéric, Philippe believes in the terroir as well as producing quality wines with structure and personality.
Region
Grands Echézeaux
One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Much more compact and homogenous than the neighbouring Echezeaux, the Grands Echézeaux vineyards are owned by around twenty producers - very modest in Burgundian terms. The most celebrated producers include Domaines de la Romanee Conti, d'Eugenie and Mongeard-Mugneret. These fine wines are richly complex yet balanced and have enormous ageing potential.
