  • Goedhuis, April 2004

We were Mme Gasqueton and her daughter Mme de Baritault's first visitors on a Monday morning in the northern Medoc. There seemed to be ducks appearing from all directions to land on the Calon Segur pond as we approached. These two delightful grandes dames enthused about the Cabernet Sauvignon in 2003 describing it as 'splendid', the likes of which they had never seen before. It makes up 60% of the blend with 35% merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine itself is great. With a bright healthy colour, a dark currant nose and a fine, long palate with an impressive although ripe structure, it is one of our favourites.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 93

This beautiful 2003 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color, a vigorous youthfulness, and plenty of mulberry, black currant and cherry fruit intermixed with notions of cedarwood, baking spices and roasted herbs. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, fresh and precise, this wine is just hitting full maturity where it should remain for another 10-15 years

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 94

Bottled in July, 2005, the saturated ruby/purple-colored 2003 exhibits a tightly-knit, but promising nose of mulberries, blackberries, cherries, and hints of new oak and truffles. This 60% Cabernet Sauvignon / 40% Merlot blend possesses a gorgeous texture as well as an expansive, exotic softness, and 13% alcohol (according to the proprietor, Madame Denise Gasqueton). Generous and rich, this high class, full-bodied wine will undoubtedly be more approachable than its closest spiritual sibling, the 1982. Drink: Now-2030.

  • Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 94-96

This extraordinary 2003 tops the scale at only 13% alcohol, but it exhibits a similarity at this stage to the brilliant 1982. A dense plum/purple color is followed by a big, sweet, ripe nose of blackberries, kirsch liqueur, earth, and hints of truffle and licorice. The wine is opulent, even unctuously textured, with low acidity, but powerful, concentrated, dense, chewy flavors. The wine is high in tannin, but it is sweet and well-integrated. Madame Gasqueton thinks it is an atypical but brilliant wine for Calon-Segur. By the traditional standards practiced at this estate, the 2003 is a more precocious and flamboyant effort. Drink: Now-2030.

  • James Suckling, April 2004, Score: 92-94

Loads of blackberry and spice character with hints of cedar. Full-bodied, with lots of smoky character and loads of meat, chocolate and fruit. A gorgeous Calon. Could be higher than this range in bottle. Let's wait and see. -- J.S.

Château Calon-Ségur

The most northerly classified growth in the Médoc, Château Calon-Ségur has had a gracious history. Though he also owned such celebrated châteaux as Lafite and Latour, he would proudly state: "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon." He immortalised his affection by creating a heart on the label - a symbol that exists to this day. Calon-Ségur was owned and managed for many years by Mme. Denise Capbern Gasqueton, a magical hostess who captures the essence of La Vieille France with all its tradition, elegance and etiquette. She sadly passed away in 2011 but the inate quality of the vineyards ensures Calon-Ségur's place among the top wines of the appellation.Read less

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
