Tasting Notes

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2004,
    Score: 89-91

2002 Clos de Vougeot: (this and the Latricières are from the oldest vines of the Domaine and this wine comes from a superbly situated parcel of Clos de Vougeot high on the hill, next to Alfred Haegelen's parcel adjoining the wall). This too is very oaky on the nose but there is betterdensity on the palate, which helps to buffer the oak influence. The flavors reveal strong earth, good complexity and fine power and length. The robust finish is austere yet promising in its fashion. (89-91)/2009+

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the heart of the Cote de Nuits producing only red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. The vines are enclosed within a single walled vineyard built by monks in the 12th and 14th Centuries. With 47.54 hectares under vine Clos de Vougeot is the largest Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote d'Or.
